85,636 SF New Construction
This project is located at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Romulus, Michigan and consists of a new 85,636 four-story structure constructed immediately adjacent to the existing North Terminal Facility. The standalone building is connected to the current terminal via an elevated walkway and will utilize the terminal’s utility and building system infrastructure. The building serves as the headquarters for the Airport Authority’s administrative personnel.
The exterior of the steel-framed structure is a combination of horizontally installed metal sandwich panel on cold formed metal framing and ribbon windows. The roof has a jet fuel resistant PVC membrane with a skylight over the feature stairs. Interior finishes compliment the open office concept plan with resilient and hard tile floor coverings, acoustical ceilings, wall covering and custom panel wall treatments in select areas such as the lobby areas and conference rooms.
The project presented challenges while constructing the facility immediately adjacent to an active airport terminal. Construction methodology had to take into account all necessary measures to not affect the traveling public, airport security, and daily airport operations.
